_{the son of a famous australian porn star—mari anne jeevas—matt lived a relatively happy life until one day, his mother took him to an orphanage in england where she said matt would be safe from his father. she promised she would come visit him, but unfortunately never got the chance to keep that promise, as she was killed in an accident on her way back home. of course, news about her death were kept secret from matt—dr. ruvie, head of the wammy's house orphanage thought that the knowledge of his mother's death would affect young matt's progress in school, and wammy's was all about progress, all about perfection.}

matt tried to fit in—not much, though; he kind of liked being the odd one out—but despite his best efforts, he couldn't quite adapt to the place. it was all too weird for him, genius kids all around and difficult tests every day, and then there were all those people in white coats... wammy's was more like a hospital or a prison than an orphanage.

like any newcomer, matt was shy at first, tried to please everyone and be good, but all his noble intentions went down the drain when he met mello, scary-smart chocoholic psycho with an ego the size of alaska. matt ended up on mello's 'people to kill' list after trying, and for the most part succeeding to protect one of the kids from mello. the fact that said kid was near, wammy's top student and mello's nemesis didn't play in matt's favour at all, but near thanked him and that made matt feel strangely happy. happy enough that he decided to make a habit out of foiling mello's plans of bullying near.

how he became mello's best friend is an entirely different story. he doesn't even know it himself what changed between them and when, but he was glad something did change, because matt kind of liked mello's exuberance and complete disregard for authority.

he was ten or eleven years old when he finally found out about his mother's death, and to make things that much better, he also found out that his mother had been more or less a prostitute. porn star or street whore, it was the same thing to matt, same kind of filth... and surprisingly enough, he discovered that he didn't care, not as much as he should have anyway.

so he went back to being matt the troublemaker, matt the rebel and matt the friend who always covered up mello's mistakes.

it went like this for a few years, matt adapting to the way things were going at the orphanage and even managing to get into top three. things changed somewhat with the sudden appearance of a young man called lawliet, followed by the arrival of another young man, a japanese college student called light yagami. apparently, this yagami boy was supposed to "treat" lawliet, who was an incredibly weird and antisocial person. matt didn't care much, he was too busy enjoying puberty to worry about some weird caveman-like guy who spent most of his waking hours eating candy and staring at walls; however, curiosity kicked in with a vengeance after matt accidentally ran into lawliet. the guy was really weird, not your normal average loner; he spoke in a funny way, he acted like some sort of savage person, but was otherwise insanely smart. he confused the hell out of matt and made him want to know more about him.

he never really found out who exactly lawliet was, where he came from and what business he had with sir wammy, but he did find out enough to make mello and near curious...

_{mello, best friend and partner in crime. they nag each other on a daily basis, sometimes to the point where one of them snaps and the whole thing degenerates into wrestling, but despite their almost constant bickering, the two are like brothers, and when one of them gets punished for something, the other takes his side and, nine times out of ten, the two end up sharing the punishment.
near, little brother figure, near is the only person to have ever made matt feel protective of someone. being close friends with him, matt managed to make near understand mello a bit better and thus ease the tension between the two of them.
lawliet, matt has mixed feelings about him. they've met a couple of times and each time, matt got the distinct feeling of being analyzed like he was some sort of weird specimen that needed cataloguing. however, that didn't stop the boy from trying to talk to lawliet, curious about the man's presence and purpose within the L project.
light yagami, matt enjoys tormenting him, probably because he gets the most delicious reactions out of him. other than that, he doesn't find him interesting or fun to be around.
roger ruvie, headmaster at wammy's orphanage, doctor ruvie kind of scares matt with his distant, professional attitude. he tries his best to avoid him, but due to his law-breaking activities, he ends up seeing him more than necessary.
sir quillsh wammy, founder of wammy's house as well as the L project, sir wammy is something akin to a god in matt's eyes. however, later events lead matt to believe that sir wammy isn't quite the saint and benefactor he thought he was.}
